The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team
The English team has chosen a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while also strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
