Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
